My brother offered to take my mom to his place for a couple of days, so me and AC had some time to ourselves! It was a rather last-minute sort of thing, so we weren't really able to plan anything. But I treated myself to a facial (which I haven't done in about 4 years) and then we had a nice "date" visiting the aquarium. The rest of the time I made phone calls and did some research about my mom's future care options.
It may not sound like a stupendously good time, but it's the most private time we've had together in ages, and it was much needed, and it was soo-o-ooo nice to be alone with AC away from home for awhile.
I've decided I need to ask my siblings to plan their visits in advance whenever possible so that me and AC can make our own plans in advance. We probably could have put our time to better use or made plans with friends if we'd known we'd have a couple of days off ahead of time. It also helps a lot to know when your next time off is -- it gives you something to look forward to and helps alleviate some of the stress when you know you'll have a break from it soon. This is something I would highly advise to other caregivers.
